(John 14:5-6) 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
In book of John Jesus had 7 proclamations of I AM. So far, we have learned “I AM the bread of life,” “I AM the light of the world,” “I AM the gate for the sheep,” “I AM the good shepherd,” and “I AM the resurrection and the life.” Today Commander will talk about Jesus’ “I AM the Way the Truth and the Life.”
During the time Jesus was having the last supper with His disciples for the Passover and then to be crucified on the cross, Jesus told His disciples that He was going to leave them for a while, all the disciples were troubled and sad. They didn’t know where Jesus was going, and how to find Him again. So, Jesus comforted them don’t be sad, and He told them, “I AM the Way the Truth and the Life.” Let’s watch a video. (play video)
Yes, Jesus Himself, is the only Way for us to come to the Father, He is the only Truth to reflect what God is and He is the only eternal Life.
Firstly, let’s think about “Jesus is the only way:”
Did you use to go travelling with your parents by driving? First of all, your parents would need to decide where to go – we say it is our destination. Let’s say, that we will go to Lake Tahoe.
Then the next question is how to get there. Well, now a day, we all use GPS, which may be built in the car, or a standalone unit or may just use our smartphone. See the GPS I have in my hand – It tells me how to drive to Lake Tahoe, and it tells me there are several ways to get to Lake Tahoe and I can just choose one from all the ways. Do you know before the GPS was invented the important tool for navigation is so called compass?
However, it is not very precise, therefore, with a little mistake, it causes a big error and the ship will get lost in the ocean. Jesus said, “I AM the Way,… and nobody comes to the Father except through me.” So, commander ask you what is the destination for our journey of life? Lake Tahoe? New York? How about the Hell of fire? No, here Jesus was talking about going to God the Father, to the heaven of eternal life. This means that If we want to go to the heaven of eternal life and forever peace, Jesus is the only way. Don’t expect you will find an alternative method to our God’s place. Jesus didn’t say I am the GPS or I am the compass to guide you to the heaven. Instead, He said, “I am the way!” Jesus, Himself, is not only the GPS, He Himself, is the highway to take us to the heaven. The Bible Acts 4:12 told us, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” We understand there is no other name other than Jesus for the salvation. Therefore, we have to put full trust in Him, and never think there is some other saviors who will take us to the heaven. Only Jesus can take us to the heaven.
Secondly, Jesus said He is the Truth. Well, boys and girls, let commander ask you what is the truth? Oh, Bright answered “God’s righteousness.” Yes, very good! As a matter of fact, it is the whole Bible – the Word. Jesus is the Word, the Truth of God.
Jesus is the center of the Bible, not only in the new testament, but also in the old testament. Jesus is not only shown in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, He also exists in the book of Genesis, Exodus,… though, we don’t see the name of Jesus in the books of the old testament, but Jesus is there. Commander encourage you read the Bible daily and make it as a habit for your life!
Lastly, commander would like to talk about Jesus is the Life. As we have learned this from last Sunday commander talked about Jesus’ “I am the resurrection and the life.” We just have a review for it. OK, what kind of life Jesus was talking about here? Yes, Victorine just said “the eternal life!” Jesus is the life, so that He can sacrifice His own life for us to redeem our lives from being punished by God. Jesus is the eternal life, therefore, He can resurrect from the dead. Jesus didn’t say He will take you to the eternal life. He was saying that He Himself is the eternal life. Jesus is alive in the past, at present, and forever!
Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Yes, only in Jesus, our sinful body can be transformed to a new body having the eternal life like Jesus’. Jesus Christ is the only way, and the only truth and the only life! Jesus Christ is enough for you and me, He is all we need. Boys and girls, let’s read the verses John 14:5-6 together. Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
