You are Anointed<\/h2>\n
\n

Do you realise that right now you are \u2018anointed\u2019 by God? \u2018Anointing\u2019 is not just for special Christian leaders or speakers. It is for all of us. Do you know that this anointing gives you power over sin, temptation and evil? Do you know that this anointing gives you access to God in prayer and worship? Do you know that this anointing enables you to proclaim God\u2019s <\/em>message to other people?<\/p>\n

All of this is possible because God has given you the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit not only guarantees our future, he is the down payment in advance. \u2018He anointed <\/em>us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit guaranteeing<\/em> what is to come\u2019 (2 Corinthians 1:21\u201322).<\/p>\n

When you exchange contracts on a house it is usually accompanied by a deposit \u2013 which not only guarantees what is to come but is also a part payment in advance. God \u2018by his Spirit has stamped us with an eternal pledge \u2013 a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete\u2019 (2 Corinthians 1:21, MSG). By giving you the Holy Spirit, God has already given you this deposit in advance of what one day you will receive in full. What does this anointing of the Holy Spirit mean in practice?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

1. Experience now God\u2019s parental love for you<\/h2>\n

Psalm 103:13-22<\/a>The moment our children were born, Pippa and I felt <\/em>an overwhelming love for them \u2013 which continues to this day. This is the natural instinct of every parent. We feel <\/em>a deep-seated love for our children, which is not based on performance or achievement, but simply on who they are.<\/p>\n

This is how God loves you \u2013 only even more so. \u2018As parents feel <\/em>for their children, God feels <\/em>for those who fear him\u2019 (v.13, MSG).<\/p>\n

Have you ever felt <\/em>God\u2019s love for you? Do you know deep down that God loves you more than any parent loves their child? Have you experienced this love being poured into your heart by the Holy Spirit? God wants you to experience this parental love right now and to know that it will continue forever.<\/p>\n

David seems to get a glimpse of the fact that it is not just for this life: \u2018But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord\u2019s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children\u2019s children \u2013 with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts\u2019 (vv.17\u201318).<\/p>\n

\u2018Praise the Lord, O my soul\u2019 (v.22). Praise you, Lord, for your amazing love and compassion for me, even greater than any parent\u2019s compassion for their child. Thank you that you have anointed me and put your Spirit in my heart so that I can experience that love right now.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

2. Experience now the promises of God<\/h2>\n

2 Corinthians 1:12-22<\/a>Do you realise that all the promises of God are for you? \u2018Whatever God has promised gets stamped with the Yes of Jesus\u2019 (v.20, MSG).<\/p>\n

By the Holy Spirit, God has put \u2018his Yes within us. By his Spirit he has stamped us with his eternal pledge \u2013 a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete\u2019 (vv.21\u201322, MSG).<\/p>\n

It is as though God\u2019s promises in the Old Testament have been underlined and re-affirmed in Jesus. As St Paul explains it, \u2018For no matter how many promises God has made, they are \u201cYes\u201d in Christ\u2019 (v.20). We see the ultimate expression <\/em>of God\u2019s love at the cross<\/em>, and know the ultimate experience <\/em>of God\u2019s love through the Holy Spirit<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What is concealed <\/em>in the Old Testament is revealed <\/em>in the New Testament. In Christ you will enjoy God\u2019s everlasting love forever. As St Paul puts it, \u2018Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing <\/em>what is to come\u2019 (vv.21\u201322). It is the same God who anointed both Paul and the Corinthians.<\/p>\n

It is not that only certain special Christians are anointed. We know that \u2018God anointed <\/em>Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power\u2019 (Acts 10:38). What is so amazing is that the same Spirit who anointed Jesus, has anointed <\/em>you. You are \u2018anointed\u2019 by the Holy Spirit and so am I. God\u2019s Spirit who lives in you as the \u2018deposit\u2019 is also the one who gives you his \u2018anointing\u2019. In order to understand how rich and beautiful this promise is we need to understand the Old Testament background.<\/p>\n

Lord, thank you so much that all the promises of God find their \u2018Yes\u2019 in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). Thank you that you have put your Holy Spirit in my heart. Thank you that you have anointed me with your \u2018seal of ownership\u2019 (v.22) and put your Spirit in my heart \u2018as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come\u2019 (v.22).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

3. Experience now God\u2019s anointing on your life<\/h2>\n

2 Chronicles 29:1-31:1<\/a>In the Old Testament, three groups of people were anointed: kings, priests and prophets. Through the work of the Holy Spirit in us, we are all now anointed with a kingly anointing<\/em>, apriestly anointing <\/em>and a prophetic anointing<\/em>. What does this mean in practice?<\/p>\n
